The Duomo, at eye level.
Seventh floor of The Medelan, on Piazza Cordusio, a few steps from the Duomo. From May to October a roof garden brings the cathedral to eye level. Close to the sky in the middle of the city: from here Milan opens out, and the noise falls away.

The restaurant above the city
The design is by GLA, Genius Loci Architettura, inside a 1902 building that once housed Credito Italiano and has since been restored to the highest standards of environmental sustainability. Soft lines, natural materials, and a fully glazed wall that dissolves the border between inside and out and lets the city in. Walls finished in a render made from rice husks, wood salvaged from old vinegar houses: nothing here is new for the sake of being new.
The name comes from the Horti Conclusi, the enclosed monastery gardens where rare plants were grown, and the herbs grow right beside the tables.

An observatory over Milan
From the terrace the city reads like a moving map. On one side the new outlines of CityLife and Porta Nuova, with Piazza Gae Aulenti; on the other the landmarks that have always told Milan’s story: the Torre Velasca, the Duomo, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. From up here the conversation between the city’s past and its future becomes a single weave, and it shifts with every season.

Two seasons, the same floor.
From May to October you step out onto the terrace, designed by the architect and self-described botanical dramaturge Raffaella Colombo as a low, shifting landscape, conceived to bring the city closer to a nature made of small detail, fragility and slow change. A garden that never imposes itself but turns with the weather and the seasons, until it becomes part of the evening.
From November to April you move back under the high ceilings, among forty seats, with the light of the city in the tall windows.
The same menu, two different lights. Summer dinner ends as Milan falls asleep; in winter it begins as the streets around empty out.
